Wind Noise at 15 miles per hour (without Cat-Ears / AirStreamz)
Wind Noise at 15 miles per hour using patented Cat-Ears / AirStreamz
We test our products at different speeds (10-35 mph), turbulence levels, and yaw / pitch variations.
"The average person facing a 21 mph wind experiences wind noise at an intensity of 92 dB."
(Experiments on the Noise Heard by Human Beings when Exposed to Atmospheric Winds, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway)
Hear the Difference - How Cat-Ears / AirStreamz work at 15 miles per hour.
Wind noise is a complex phenomenon spanning aerodynamics, acoustics, and the physiology of human hearing. The amount of acoustic noise generated depends on factors like 1) speed, 2) riding position, 3) turbulence, and so on. At moderate cycling speeds, wind noise can impact the ability to hear surrounding sounds.
The theory of aero-acoustics, the physics describing the generation of sound by unsteady airflow, is difficult and not complete. The location of the sources of wind noise via measurement is challenging and requires specialized test facilities and equipment. Understanding the basic theory is critical for effective product design.
Exhaustive testing ensures that our products are the most effective devices of their kind. We use precision recording equipment, professional spectral analysis software, CT (hot-wire) anemometers / pressure probes, and high-resolution flow visualization imaging tools. In addition to testing in designed use environments, we incorporate more controlled and repeatable laboratory testing in our two open jet quiet wind tunnels and hydrodynamic flume.
The importance of materials engineering cannot be overstated. Characteristics like texture, porosity, permeability, diffusion, resilience, etc. are evaluated / combined to meet internal and external flow requirements across a range of wind speeds and turbulence levels. In this regard, Cat-Ears is the only cycling related wind noise reduction (WNR) company to hold a utility patent (USPTO #9078482 - Sound Permeable Wind Noise Reduction Device).
Acoustic transparency is critical for situational awareness. Understanding material properties and acoustics are necessary to successfully develop materials / products with an optimal signal (sound) to noise (wind) ratio. Clear communications and the ability to pinpoint the location of surrounding sounds can be very important.
