Wind Noise Reduction Products

There are now six 'passive' wind noise reduction products on the market. We purchased the products

pictured below between 2016 and 2017. Please visit the respective websites for possible product updates.

In addition to the five products pictured above, a product called 'Helmet Angel' recently entered the market.

Note: In our opinion, any manufacturer making claims regarding the aeroacoustic effectiveness of a device should demonstrate the validity of such claims, including the presentation of test data and the specific methods used to validate the claims. (R. Weissner, Managing Director, Cat-Ears, LLC)

Original Wind Noise Reduction Products

Slipstreamz Win Noise Reduction

Based in South Africa, Slipstreamz are made in China. The Spoilers retail for about $10.00. "Slipstreamz Spoilers are unique in using the front strap of your helmet to smooth the airflow over the side of your head and ears for improved cycling performance, enjoyment and safety." - Quoted from the Slipstreamz website.

Slipstreamz makes no decibel related performance claims.

In addition to the Spoilers, Slipstreamz also sells the Slip for about $25.00. The Slip covers the entire ear. "They also reduce irritating wind noise, which in turn: improves awareness of your surroundings, keeps ears warm on cool days, & greatly enhances your ability to hear conversations, traffic sounds and other ambient noises." - Quoted from the Slipstreaz website

Windfree Wind Noise Reduction

Based in Sweden, Windfree AB products are made in China and retail for about $30.00. "Windfree comprises a foam with a cell structure that allows sound to pass but not wind.  We have simulated the ears of fast animals, which are protected by fur.  Windfree is patent protected." - Quoted from the Windfree website.

"According to wind tunnel tests at KTH, Windfree products can reduce the noise caused by wind by as much as 20 decibels." (KTH Aeronautical and Engineering Sciences, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden) - From the Windfree website

"Everyone that is biking out there when it blows knows how tiring it can be with the constant wind noise in the ears. Now there is a way to remove it - but still hear the surrounding area clear. Windfree is patent protected (001755711-0001EU and US D669,574 S)." - Windfree website

AirStreamz Wind Noise Reduction

Introduced during 2012, Cat-Ears® products are made in the USA and retail for about $18.00. "Cat-Ears® reduce wind noise producing wind turbulence. During the development of our latest products, we thoroughly investigated and addressed the specific sources of wind noise. We also identified and addressed other key (critical to cyclist) product requirements like comfort, moisture wicking, smaller size, easy attachment..." - Rick Weissner

"Our new AirStreamz™, based on PileTech™ materials science / engineering, are recommended for Casual to Competitive Cyclists.  Developed through aerodynamic / acoustic research, AirStreamz™ are made from proprietary Acoustic Pile materials that dampen / dissipate / deflect oncoming wind while reducing the intensity of noise producing turbulence." - Rick Weissner

Our products typically reduce perceived wind noise by 60% to 75%.  While the amount of perceived wind noise reduction can vary (based on speed, turbulence, age, etc.), we stand behind our products as the most effective strap devices of their kind on the market." -  Rick Weissner

Products Similar to Previous Designs / Concepts

Introduced during 2013, Wind-Blox are imported from Pakistan and retail for about $18.00 They are similar to homemade iterations shared on several cycling forums (see below).  That is, they are basically pieces of closed cell (sound blocking) foam covered with fabric and attach to the leading helmet straps with hook / loop fasteners.

Wind-Blox claims to "Stop over 80% of bicycle wind noise..." -a)

(a- Given this 'too good to be true' claim, we analyzed the 'With Wind-Blox' and 'Without Wind-Blox' audio files on their website.  We ran the two audio files through Sigview and TrueRTA Audio Analysis Software.  The correct wind noise reduction is less than 60%.

A few comments regarding other Wind-Blox business practices are noted below:

Wind-Blox

Wind-Blox fake award.
  • W-B has used fictitious names on numerous cycling forums to promote products. When caught, forum moderators closed, banned, and / or deleted their accounts.

Given the false / misleading claims, Wind-Blox risks disappointing customers and damaging others in the wind noise reduction industry.   Please click here to learn more about Wind-Blox business practices.

  • W-B claims that Windfree has an adverse "Impact to Ambient Sound" of 74%.  This is an absurd assertion.  W-B are made from sound blocking foam.  Not Windfree.

  • W-B claims to have received an award for "Most Effective Wind Noise Reduction." Unfortunately... there is no such award.  Perhaps the claim helps sell products.

Helmet Angel Reduces Wind Noise

Based in the United Kingdom, the Helmet Angel product is made in the UK and retails for about $20.00. They are similar to a wind deflecting design that was developed during the 1990's (see below). "Hear more clearly and react more swiftly to what is happening around you when you cycle." - Quoted from the Helmet Angel website

"Researchers found that the shells made a massive difference in enabling riders to hear sounds behind them" - From the Helmet Angel website

"Helmet Angel is the brainchild of David Crampton." - From the Helmet Angel website

"Wind noise can certainly be dangerous. When cycling at speed, it can be very difficult to hear traffic emerging or a friend shouting ‘Stop’!  And you cannot have a casual conversation with other cyclists unless you turn round to talk… which causes yet another risk." - From the Helmet Angel website

Helmet Angel

Discontinued Wind Noise Reduction Products

This product appears to have been developed during the early 1990's.

Silencer - "Reduce Wind Noise"

This is the original hard plastic wind deflector. Razor style grip for secure helmet strap attachment. Made from hard plastic, the obvious sound blocking aspect of this design would be our biggest safety concern.

The Helmet Angel product (see above) is similar to the Silencer.

Silencer (1992)

This product appears to have been available from 2004 until about 2008.

Windfoil - "Hear The Difference"

"Wind noise is created by air rushing past the folds of the ear...  Windfoil's lightweight polymer surface uses patented MicroVents to create a laminar airflow. This prevents unwanted wind noise while permitting ordinary sound to pass through. WindFoils easily clip to your helmet straps and fit comfortably over your ears." - Windfoil

Cycling forum comments regarding the Windfoil were mixed.

Windfoil (2004)

This product appears to have been available for a limited time during 2015.

D:flekt - "Wind Noise Reduction Device"

"Wind noise generated when cycling is not only annoying but reduces your ability to hear clearly when moving. The faster you go, the worse it gets. D:flekt helps greatly reduce the effects of wind noise on your hearing so you can hear what's going on around you or hear the feedback from your favorite cycling app or music without having the volume at dangerously loud levels." - D:flect

The D:flect product may have had very limited availability.

The claim that Wind-Blox 'invented' this WNR concept might be more than a little inaccurate.

Any patent claims by Wind-Blox are probably meaningless given the existence of Prior Art.

"Prior Art is any evidence that your invention is already known. Prior Art does not need to exist physically or be commercially available. It is enough that someone, somewhere, sometime previously has described or shown or made something that contains a use of technology that is very similar to your invention." (USPTO)
