Don't let Sound Masking Wind Noise Interfere with Your Safety

"The average person facing a 21 mph wind experiences wind noise at an intensity of 92 dB."

(Experiments on the Noise Heard by Human Beings when Exposed to Atmospheric Winds, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway)

The car that will hit you when road cycling is the one you don't see.

Sound source identification and localization has a high survival value.

"A study by the League of American Bicyclists found that the most likely type of fatal bicycle crash

is 'motorist overtaking bicycle' - i.e. struck from behind - accounting for forty percent of cyclist fatalities.”

The Worlds Best Selling and Most Effective Wind Noise Reduction Products for Cyclists.

Over 50,000 satisfied customers in 50+ countries. Over 750 unsolicited testimonials.

"With Cat-Ears, I found I was enjoying rides more... Simply because I could hear more of what I wanted and less of what I didn't."

Joe Lindsey, Bicycling Magazine

"Wrap this pile material around your helmet strap to reduce wind noise in your ears... so you can more easily hear cars coming and friends talking."

Erin Beresini, Outside Magazine

"Cat-Ears work well at reducing wind noise, particularly at higher speeds. Allowing improved awareness of surrounding traffic and racers. I heard little more than tires, gears, and birds on my a.m. ride."

James Huang, Tech. Editor, BikeRadar / CyclingNews

"I can't say enough good things about this product. Wind Noise can inhibit one's ability to distinguish traffic noise, often a first line of defense in an urban setting. Cat-Ears don't restrict hearing while others I've tried do."

Patrick Finley, Adventure Cycling Association

Wind Noise

Wind noise is a complex phenomenon spanning aerodynamics, acoustics, and the physiology of human hearing.  The amount experienced depends on factors like: 1) speed, 2) riding position, 3) turbulence, and so on.   Wind noise impacts communications and the ability to hear surrounding sounds.

The theory of aero-acoustics, the physics describing wind noise, is difficult and not complete.  Location of the sources of wind noise via measurement is very challenging and requires specialized test facilities and equipment.  Understanding the theory and its implications for measurement and analysis is critical for designing the most effective wind noise reduction products for cyclists.

Exhaustive Testing

Exhaustive testing ensures that our products are the most effective of their kind on the market. We use precision audio recording equipment, spectral analysis software, CT anemometers, and high resolution imaging tools.  In addition to 'stress testing' in 'designed use' environments, we incorporate laboratory testing in custom built facilities, including:

  • Two open jet quiet wind tunnels with controllable speed and turbulence.

  • A hydrodynamic (water) flume using fluorescein dye for flow visualization.

Our products are road and laboratory tested at speeds up to 40 mph - with variable turbulence.

Materials Engineering

Materials engineering makes a big difference.  We evaluate, incorporate, and blend key characteristics like density, denier, texture, porosity, resilience, etc. Challenging conditions require specifically designed textiles and we hold utility patent #US 9078482 (Sound Permeable Wind Noise Reduction Device).

Acoustic Transparency

Acoustic transparency is critical for situational awareness when cycling.  While some products incorporate materials that block or deflect sound transmission - including desired sounds, we focus on optimizing the signal to wind noise ratio. Clear communications, and pinpointing the location of sound sources, are important.  Our products are tested for acoustic transparency / sound source localization.

We stand behind our products as the most effective devices of their kind on the market.

Cat-Ears / AirStreamz is the leading manufacturer of aero-acoustically designed passive wind noise reduction products for serious cyclists.
